Tesla Cybertruck Faces Fifth Recall in Less Than a Year Due to Rearview Camera Glitch

14 October 2024

Tesla has announced yet another recall for its Cybertruck, marking the fifth time in less than a year that the electric pickup has been recalled. The latest recall affects 27,185 Cybertrucks due to a malfunction in the rearview camera system, which poses a potential safety hazard.

According to the filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue involves the rearview camera display, which can remain blank for up to eight seconds after the driver shifts into reverse. Federal regulations require rearview screens to display the rear view within two seconds of shifting, and Tesla admitted this delay increases the risk of an accident by obstructing the driver’s view.

The recall impacts specific 2024 model year Cybertrucks manufactured between November 13, 2023, and September 14, 2024. The affected trucks reportedly operate with a software issue that governs their low-voltage hardware, leading to the delayed rearview camera activation.

Tesla’s futuristic Cybertruck, which has a price range between $57,390 and $96,390, has struggled with various technical issues since its release in December 2023. In addition to this latest recall, the truck has also faced complaints from some owners about rusting, which has further clouded its early reputation.

The Cybertruck’s recall history this year includes a February recall of nearly 2.2 million units due to the small, unreadable font used on the antilock brake system warning light. April saw another recall, affecting about 4,000 vehicles due to a malfunctioning accelerator pedal. Two additional recalls followed in June, addressing windshield wiper failures and loose exterior trim pieces.

For this most recent issue, Tesla has already rolled out a free software update to fix the rearview camera delay. Owners will also receive notification letters by mail, which are expected to be sent out starting November 25, 2024.

Cybertruck owners can contact Tesla’s customer service line at 1-877-798-3752 with questions regarding the recall. Tesla has designated this recall with the number SB-24-00-016. Alternatively, owners may reach out to NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 or visit the agency’s website for more information under recall number 24V-718.

As the Cybertruck continues to evolve, Tesla is working to address these recurring issues. However, the repeated recalls raise questions about the long-term reliability and quality of the company’s first electric pickup.
